If you’ve been keeping track of our EU Road trip adventure you’ll have noticed that we went to three new (to us) countries this time - Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg. You’ve also probably noticed we try not to leave a country without trying McDonald’s at least once…so here we are at McDonald’s in Luxembourg!

We again were right on the border (Luxembourg is a pretty tiny country, after all) and we had just eaten a ton in the city so we weren’t very hungry, but we still managed to try some unique items!
Ordering was pretty standard for McDonald’s in Europe in that you ordered at the kiosks. This makes it particularly handy when you don’t speak the language because you can select everything to be in English.

However, unlike most McDonald’s, there wasn’t even an option to order at the counter! Most places have both, here your only choice was to use the kiosk. And you couldn’t choose to pick up your order at the counter either, because there was no customer-facing counter. Instead, they had people working as runners who picked up the food at the window and brought it to you. I call them runners because they were moving fast, even flitting up and down the stairs to the seating area above!

We went simple with our order, going for a Grand Bacon burger, waffle fries with ranch dip, and a mango smoothie.

The burger felt pretty high-end for a McDonald’s, I mean, just look at that bun! And the perfect curly lettuce! The bacon was nice and crispy and it was overall great. Not as good as the burgers Joel makes at home, but great for McDonald’s.

This was my first time ever seeing waffle fries on a McDonald’s menu so I was pretty excited to order those. They did not disappoint! They were perfectly crispy on the outside and squishy on the inside. They even helpfully threw in a regular fry for comparison (see group picture above) and if I had my choice I would always order the waffle fries. The “Buttermilk Ranch” dipping option on the other hand…there’s a reason I put that title in quotes. You can see it looks nothing like a proper ranch (why is it yellow?) and it tasted nothing like it either. Don’t get me wrong, the dip was tasty and I would eat it again, I just don’t think you can call it ranch!

For the drink, Joel was very excited about the mango smoothie option, again something we had yet to encounter on a McDonald’s menu. But we were both rather baffled when it came looking like this. I would call this less “smoothie” and more “mango juice with ice.” Again, tasty, just not quite what we were expecting!

Overall the whole visit was rather pricey - for just the one meal consisting of burger, fries and a drink, we paid €12.95 which is about £11 or $14. For that kind of money, I feel like I could get a similar meal at an actual restaurant. But who knows these days with inflation! This was a quick, tasty option and I wouldn’t turn my nose up at it if I found myself hungry and in a hurry.

After this we were on our way to Brussels for one final evening with friends and then the trip home the next day!
XOXO, Bethany
