I knew going in that this was my kind of movie. I have a soft spot for Nick Offerman (ever since Parks and Recreation) and I love a story centered around music. The previews for this one had me tearing up, so I was all kinds of excited.
Hearts Beat Loud follows the story of a father and daughter during her last summer before she goes to college. In a bit of a parental role reversal, she wants to be studying hard for her pre-med classes, while he wants to spend time together writing music and starting a band. Over the course of the summer we see their relationship, as well as others, grow and change with her impending departure. It's a beautiful study of music and relationships and how change affects our lives.
There were a lot of scenes in this movie where Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons are simply experimenting and creating music with each other. It is truly a delight to watch. As far as I can tell both actors are real musicians, and Ms. Clemons has an amazing voice. This is a movie I could see myself watching over and over again.
If you like heartwarming tales and music, this one is for you. If you don't, I'm not sure what kind of monster you are, lol. I think this could be especially poignant viewing for any parents and kids struggling with an upcoming separation and life changes. I think it's worth a watch for everyone!
