I had not heard a single thing about this movie before it showed up on our theater's schedule this week. I don't think our theater even showed a single preview for it (I mean if they had we would have seen it, right? We go to all the movies!). Between this and the title I full expected this movie to be terrible. Like, Geostorm terrible. Instead, this movie surprised me in the very best way.
The movie follows two brothers, Brees and Will Rutledge, as well as ATF agent Casey. Will is a meteorologist helping to track the hurricane bearing down on Gulfport, AL, trying to convince his superiors it is going to be a storm the likes of which has never been seen. Casey is tasked with delivering a load of to-be -destroyed money to the treasury, and it's her responsibility to guard the 600 million dollars inside until then. The facility is plagued with a series of malfunctions including the back up generator, for which Brees is on call as the maintenance man. When the heist begins, these three characters get drawn into dangerous territory as the fight to save hostages and the money.
I cannot stress enough how much better this movie was than I expected. It had heart without being cheesy, it had surprising amounts of humor, the characters were for the most part well-developed and well-acted. There were twists and turns, dramatic moments that made my jaw drop, and I loved that they did not force a love story. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next and I was never for a single second bored.
I love a good heist movie, I love a good storm movie, and this one combined the best of both worlds.
